Petaluma History Moment

Our own Jo Ann Pozzi presented us with another historical story of Petaluma. This was about the 1915 Pan Pacific Expo and a young women named, Lily. Lily was the great aunt of Rotarian Debra Matteri. Lily's adventure was that of entering the Milk Maid Contest. Not only did she enter and make her way via train and ferry to San Francisco but she won! Jo Ann also shared with us a little know fact: did you know that the Palace of Fine Arts' columns were made right here in Petaluma.

Here is the story of Lily Ramatici Rossini as presented by Debra Matteri:debra

Lily Ramatici Rossini  - Petaluma “Chicken” is 1915 World Milking Champion

My Great-Aunt Lily Ramatici Rossini was 18 years old when she entered and won the milkmaid contest at the Panama Pacific International Exposition World Fair in San Francisco on October 23, 1915.

In her entry letter, she described herself as “a nice looking Petaluma chicken”. She was one of about 45 milkmaids, and the watching crowd was about 5,000 – 10,000 people. Lily set a new world record and milked 17 - 4/5ths pounds of milk, about 9 quarts, in 3 minutes. Her nearest competitor only milked 15 - 2/5ths pounds. Lily won a blue ribbon and a silver loving cup, presented by the mayor – James Rolph. She achieved national fame, and was featured in several newspapers & magazines.

At the time, she was living on a ranch with her family just outside Petaluma near the Sonoma-Marin County line. It was her first trip to San Francisco. She took a train to southern Marin, and crossed the Bay on a ferryboat since the Golden Gate Bridge had not yet been built. Afterwards, her brother met her in Marin and she went home in a wagon. Petaluma honored her with several events, and she went on to win several other local milking contests.

In time, she married Joe Rossini, and they had a vineyard in St. Helena. She died in 1993 at 96 years of age. She was an aunt of my mother - Ethel Ramatici Matteri, & of Don Ramatici, who many of you know through his Petaluma insurance company. Lily advised Mom “don’t ever learn how to milk, because once you do, they have you doing it all the time.”

chiroCraft Talk

Julie Restad, on of our newest club members shared her craft talk with us today. Julie was born in Sacramento and attended UC Santa Barbara. She received her degree in Bio Psychology. Knowing that she wanted to use her hands in someway she contemplated either being an auto mechanic or perhaps a chiropractor. In 2000, Julie married husband Kyle and moved from Bakersfield to Hayward where she earned her Doctorate in Chiropractic Medicine. After graduation in 2005, the couple moved backed to the Sacramento Area. As luck would have it, an opportunity to buy a Chiropractic business in Rohnert Park fell through  - but another opened up right here in Petaluma. Julie is now settled in with her partner, Michelle in their new practice just over the freeway  on East Washington Street.

Julie believes in a "womb to tomb" approach in chiropractic medicine, where folks can take advantage of overall, lifetime healthy living. She has a dog named, Dakota and is currently commuting from Folsom but hopes to move soon to Petaluma.

Raffle: Julie Restad picked but lost.
