convened by President Sally, theme for the year ‘Rotary Shares’. Forrest F. led the pledge. Foundation Thought of the Day: The Rotary Foundation was started with a gift of $26.50 from the Rotary Club of Kansas City in 1917 – the leftover profit from the international convention that year. Earlier that same year, Rotary’s sixth president, Arch C. Klumph, suggested the creation of just such a fund. The very first grant made by the Rotary Foundation was to the International Society for Crippled Children. The idea of international service has grown. Just in the last 20 years, Rotary has contributed over US $600 million to the polio eradication effort. Thanks to everyone in the Club who has supported this program. INTRODUCTION OF ROTARIAN GUESTS: Christine Leonard (Deni’s guest). VISITING
ROTARIANS: District Governor Ken Moulton; DG’s wife Pam
Moulton; Assistant District Governor Dale Knight; Past-President
Jeannette Clark (Petaluma – Real Estate Sales); Alden Hennings
(Petaluma – retired); Al Kaplan (Petaluma – underground construction);
and Tom Niedecker (PVR – and Logana, Switzerland).ANNOUNCEMENTS / EVENTS. ![]() Induction of new member Bruce Schmuikoski; sponsored by Sheila Bride; inducted by DG Ken Moulton (whose name was momentarily forgotten by our slightly flustered, but terribly cute President; you can tell we’re not quite used to really famo us visitors). Quiet Rotarian of the Year 2007-08 was presented by DG Ken to our very own professional photographer Todd Cary for his behind the scenes, always there type of service above self. ![]() Sheila was "pinned" for bringing in the most new members. HAPPY DOLLARS, FINES, ETC.: Sheila Bride paid for a family reunion in New Mexico and returned with some great hot sauce and a tequila lollipop for our President. Jim O’Grady paid for his birthday; Russ F. paid for his birthday, a trip up north for a Corvette rally and the purchase of a new truck; Phillip P. paid for his 18th wedding anniversary celebrated with a trip to Tahoe with fireworks and dinner; Dawn D. recognized her 31st wedding anniversary with a trip (both of them survived) and honored Mo and Walt for something to do with flat tires and assistance; Jerrie P. celebrated her 10th anniversary with a wonderful dinner with their cats
(I must have missed something there); and last but never least, our
brand new member Bruce S. celebrated a trip to Maui and an outstanding
game of golf including a hole in one. Update on Chuck Hartley – he is home, doing beautifully – send cards to our wonderful fellow Rotarian. Update on former member Geri Parilla; she is living in Pittsburg (PA not CA), going to school to do something with medical billing (leaving the hospitality business far behind), her Mom is doing well. Geri’s address is 3210 Lenox Oval, Pittsburg, PA 15237; send her a note. John Strong will be returning from England later this month following his sister’s death, another great opportunity to send a card to people we all care about. Grins and Giggles: A song was sung to our visiting DG and wife, including melody and rhymes by our very own group of 4; rumor has it they’re looking for additional chorus members (sign up soon, talent not mandatory). A gift was presented to DG and wife by Linda P., a beautiful print of the Osukuru artwork; which will be framed by Pelican Gallery (they do great work) to compliment the Moulton home. Assistant DG Dale Knight announced the District Conference – May 15 – 18th in San Francisco. Great opportunity to join the fun group on a Hornblower Yacht cruise on Friday night (golf on Thursday for the truly gifted golfers, at the Presidio); great speakers; fun, fun, fun! RAFFLE: 50/50 raffle ($191) the wrong color marble was selected by Jim Furuli. PROGRAM: Asst. DG Dale K. introduced DG Ken Moulton and his wife, Pam Moulton. Pam was raised in a Rotarian family (her father a Rotarian for over 50 years), married to Ken in 1989, moved to Healdsburg shortly thereafter; she is an educational psychologist. Ken is a native Californian; UC Berkeley graduate (played football all four years, go Bears!). Ken has been a teacher and school administrator (BA in History, MA in History, and PhD in Leadership/Human Behavior). Ken was instrumental in the founding of the Windsor Boys & Girls Club and has been on the United Way Board of Directors for many years. His great sense of humor was shared with the club throughout his talk. DG Ken shared information from the RI conference in Salt Lake City and used our District Clubs’ projects as excellent examples of how Rotarians affect a positive change throughout our communities and the world: Libby and Sheila for Interact at Casa Grande High School; Frank and Kathy Mayhew in Africa; Peace Fellowship programs; Frank Layton with Rotoplast; Dale Knight with the Festival of the Brotherhood. Why do we do this? Overwhelmingly the response is “You receive much more than you give.” DG Ken shared his personal experiences, including participation in the Festival of the Brotherhood and his follow-up work with a cancer clinic; realizing that we can do even more. DG Ken had an informative PowerPoint presentation with pictures of many Rotary projects throughout the District and the World, of people who have benefited by Rotary. He quoted from many heroes from our past: “I expect to pass through this world but once….” as examples of what drives a Rotarian to do more. ![]() A story was shared about his International Assembly experience, the final training for incoming DGs and the speech made by Wilf Wilkinson, RI President. Our priorities: fresh water; health and hunger; literacy; public image (tell the story); youth involvement. DG Ken felt PVR is an excellent, effective Club, and that he was “speaking to the choir”. He shared a goal: Create a Leadership Institute, looking for heroes so stand up and be proud of what has been accomplished. Quoting Rosa Parks (a Rotarian in spirit and heart), and Ghandi (“we must be the change we seek for the world”), DG Ken emphasized the current theme of Rotary Shares has a historical emphasis: share our resources and our abilities. Thinking back to his days as a student teacher in Oakland, DG Ken shared a story about taking students to the State Capital at the end of the semester; many of them had never been out of Oakland; sharing the dream of looking outward and upward, he often wonders how those students fared; he has worked for 38 years to create that level playing field for all students. Our focus should be on partnerships with schools, around the world; polio eradication – the powerful impact we have made to millions who we will never meet or see. DG Ken’s theme this year for our District is “Mission Possible” – make a commitment
to make it happen; and ended with Margaret Mead’s
wonderful quote “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful,
committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only
thing that ever has.” The power of one….Rotarian!Wonderful visit – our Club looks forward to seeing more of DG Ken and Pam and working with them to continue the wonderful successes of our Club and our District. pt Meeting Adjourned |
