Bruce’s Craft Talk:

Today Bruce Schumikowski gave his craft talk; here are some of the highlights:

bruceBruce was born in North Hampton, Maine, where much of his family continues to live. His immediate family moved to Santa Barbara when he was 9 years old. Eventually, Bruce attended and graduated from Loyola Marymount in Southern California. He made his way into business working for Farmers, and later came to Nelson Staffing where his has worked the past 10 years. Bruce is a golfer and avid soccer fan, he currently coaches one of his son’s teams – he has two boys ages 6 and 10. Bruce and his wife, married 10 years, enjoy wine and travel and recently spent their 10th Anniversary in Spain – they also had a chance to attend a World Cup match in Germany.

Today’s Special Guest Speakers – Craft Talks from our Vets:
shadi
Shadi Shamsavari – Shadi has worked as the HR Director for Xandex the past 25 years. She lik
es to use the image of the globe with people touching hands as symbolizing what she does – being sensitive to human needs. She has also developed a personal coaching and management consulting business called Human Remedy, visit her website at humanremedy.com. Shadi has also discovered a talent for songwriting (and singing!) and has produced a musical CD with her band “Midlife Crisis” One of Shadi’s great passions is her work with Mentor Me Petaluma, she as helped bring this program not only to our club but around the community.

Dave Johnson – Dave was born in Los Angeles in 1942 about the same time that B29’sdave began flying over head. He eventually moved, with his family including 2 sisters, to Ukiah. Later he attended Chico State and got a degree in Business Organization. He and his wife, Karen, lived in San Francisco and San Carlos before settling in Petaluma in 1979.  Dave has worked jobs from picking fruit to selling men’s clothing at JC Penny’s (someone who you would not want to select that colorful tie!) – but his career lay in banking. He enjoys walking, photography, reading, TV, shooting, watching the grass grow and seeing his two boys.

jerrieJerrie Patterson – Jerrie once lived in Southern California and attended San Diego State University. She developed a skill of coin-cutting and jewelry making. Primarily, an artist, she is skilled in a variety of media (she volunteered for nearly 10 years as the costume designer for Cinnabar and is currently directing a musical in Novato). Jerrie also once had a small business producing and marketing “cat cups” original designed mugs of the feline persuasion. She met her beau, Jerry 31 years ago; Jerry was, for 15 years a Rotarian but left as his work took him to San Francisco – in stepped Jerrie keeping Rotary in the Family – the rest of their family includes two cats!

Walt Hussey – Walt was born in Stockton in 1951. His dad was a furnace man so thewalt family moved about spending time in very cold climates – to this day Walt does not have an affinity for snow – no snow is just fine by him! Walt’s grandparent’s owned a resort in Guerneville and eventually that is where he grew up. He was an early reader and remembers reading the Saturday Evening Post each week with his Grandpa. He enjoyed life as a true “river rat.” He also, as a kid, was an entrepreneur, owning the largest paper route in the area. Later in life he worked for KFC (what IS in that chicken) and eventually worked for Chevron for 9 years before opening a business in San Rafael. His current business, Walt’s Automotive, has been at the same location for 25 years. Walt has a 37 year old daughter, 3 step kids, and 4 grand kids – he currently has two beautiful wives, Connie and Sue. One of his hobbies is scuba diving and he enjoys his varied animals – horses, sheep, cattle, pigs, and exotic emus – not all at the same time, though.

johnJohnny Strong – Johnny was born in Yorkshire, England, in a family of 10 children and the same town where Captain Cook first sailed. He recently lost his first sister and spent 6 weeks in England for the services and reuniting with family and friends. He came to America the same month the Beatles arrived in 1964. His instrument was the tin snips rather than Ringo’s drums. He immediately set out to become a US citizen. Eventually he made his way to the West Coast and worked as a journeyman in Mill Valley for a “Big Swede” after 12 years he became a business owner of the same company.  For 20 years Johnny r owned and operated Copperworks here in Petaluma – but not with out trials and tribulations – his first business burned to the ground; but he soon ventured to Sacramento and bought out a business and after re-selling in Petaluma had enough to get started again. John lives on Eastman with his wife, Mamie. He, of course is a true Rotarian, but he did mention in his talk his love of the Cool Kids Camp and all that Petaluma Valley Rotary means to him.

He concluded with a personal Rotary story: When he was a Governor training, meetings which are “must attend” he found out that his father had died. Not only did the President of RI approach him but he was assigned a personal valet to insure that all details were taken care of so he could immediately make his way to England. The next morning dozens of Rotarians lined up to wish him well. One particular Rotarian, whom he had never met, offered him his home in England and the keys to his automobile. This is a poignant memory that John will never forget.

Let's hear it for the Beer...and for the the Label Artist....Maureen Frances!mo
