Uganda
convened by President Sally, theme for the year ‘Lead the Way’.
Forrest F. led the pledge.
Thought
of the Day: A new version of an old saying: “Receiving a gift
with gratitude is just as important as giving a gift” (words of wisdom
by our very own Linda P. )
INTRODUCTION OF ROTARIAN
GUESTS: Diana Guiterrez, President of Casa Grande Interact, Henry
Kaku, speaker for the day; Chris Lombardi, partner of Jim and
Octoberfest Chairman. There was an exchange of a gift through
Libby of, wonders of all wonders, a gavel (it could be one of the
missing gavels, no one knows).
VISITING ROTARIANS: Al Kaplan, Underground Construction, Petaluma Rotary;
ANNOUNCEMENTS / EVENTS.
Past
Presidents stood, in unison, and chastised President Sally for not
knowing the year she is President at the
recent SCARC meeting (2006-07,
NOT!); loss of the gavel (way too many times) and fined her $10 for her
behavior. President Sally threatened to let Pamela and Jo take
custody of the gavel.
Terry B. paid $20 fine for the new hair color (look out Marilyn Monroe).
The
Chamber of Commerce Business Expo, held tomorrow – October 11th, was
mentioned. Oktoberfest postcards will be available.
Rotary
Youth Exchange is this weekend, staying at Petaluma High School; Terry
needs 2 volunteers for this Saturday night (Dawn is as good as 2
volunteers, so she jumped up and offered to help).
Board meeting
next Tuesday evening at Sunrise Assisted Living; Finance Committee next
Tuesday (sometime, contact President Sally if you need to know)..
SCARC dinner, October 25th, signups by October 19th to Walt.
Foundation
dinner originally scheduled for November 17th, has been moved to
January 12th so no one has an excuse for not attending the Mentor Me
Petaluma event at the Moose Lodge (see Shadi for details) on November
17th.
President Sally discussed weekly meeting attendance, need
to try harder to get 100% (lots of opportunities for make-ups including
Interact, Rotaract planning meetings or Rotaract at SSU meetings
(Tuesdays at 5:30 at the Student Union, check with PP Connie for
details).
Oktoberfest: Ticket sales are coming along – m
ore are needed, so get out there and sell, sell, sell! Chris
Lombardi has offered to donate $100 to the Paul Harris of the biggest
ticket seller (more than 50). Rickie applied a short guilt trip
on those who have not signed up to work that day. Lagunitas is
donating the money from the beer sales. Lane is also selling the
beer, by the glass, so get out and buy a Lagunitas Oktoberfest
beer.
Jim O’Grady will visit the Petaluma Rotary Club meeting tomorrow to advertise the event.
Jo
T. presented President Sally with another banner from Uganda, and gave
her a basket given to her by the Mubende Rotary Club; gave PP Sheila a
beautiful carved bowl and to PDG John Strong a wood giraffe with
knobbly knees (they matched John’s very own knees). Jo presented
T-Shirts from the Great Osprey Memorial School and suggested that they
be sold to raise money for the Interact Club at the school
(scholarships are always needed).
HAPPY DOLLARS, FINES, ETC.:
Past-President
Russell paid for his wife’s 20th birthday, the same day their son
celebrated his 20th birthday (some sort of medical miracle, I guess).
Kathy
paid handsomely for Bill’s special birthday (60th), they celebrated
with a very special dinner. Russell F. paid for another ’06
corvette (his second, a matching set). Jerrie P. put her cards on
the table, she is directing a musical She Loves Me, sponsored by the
Novato Theater Company (we will have to organize a Rotary event to the
wonderful She Loves Me show. Ellie celebrated her upcoming
opening, offering a 2 for 1 for Rotarians for the entire run (opening
November 10th).
Casa Grande Interacter Diane G. challenged
the Club (via Rickie R.) to a third bowling match (October 26th, the
new first Friday; costumes are optional). Jim O’Grady paid a fine
for something.
RAFFLE: 50/50 raffle ($): President Sally
completely blew the raffle completely, asking Chris to draw the marble
(he didn’t have the winning ticket). It must of jinxed Deni,
because she drew the wrong marble, so sorry!
PROGRAM:
Henry Kaku, master of origami, was our incredibly interesting,
and wonderful program speaker. Ori (fold) gami (paper). An
old Japanese religion began to fold white paper into beautiful shapes
around 1200 AD. Around 1600 AD the crane was first
developed. Learning our right and left sides, and how to make a
triangle, most of the Rotarians managed to begin the folding
process. Handed from generation to generation, by the 1950’s the
art of origami was finally put into written form (more folding by
Rotarians, interrupted by much giggling). Going from triangles
into squares was a challenge for a few members (yes, Rickie, a square
has four equal sides). Chaos ensued, with few Rotarians actually
getting a crane, but what a riot trying. A video of this would
have won the Funniest Home Videos for sure!
Henry shared the use
of origami to teach math; the use of origami by Nasa (sending a
telescope into space, allowing it to unfold and be useable).
Henry also showed a number of beautiful designs he had created
including one of Snoopy and Woodstock commissioned by the Charles
Schulz Memorial Museum and a gorgeous crane made from 1,000 cranes,
relating the story of the girl dying from leukemia and her goal of
making 1,000 cranes as a memorial to the children who died and /or
suffered from the bomb at Hiroshima.
I was too busy trying to
make my crane to take good notes, so you just needed to be here to get
the most of it. There really are benefits to 100% attendance, you
don’t miss the incredible programs we have.
