Wednesday, October 17, 2007 DMD Reporting convened by President Sally - theme for the year “Rotary Shares”. Reception music courtesy of the talented Jim O’Grady. Forrest led the Pledge of Allegiance. Thought for the Day: “It is better to know some of the questions than all of the answers.” James Thurber ~ US author, cartoonist, humorist, & satirist (1894 - 1961) INTRODUCTION OF ROTARIAN GUESTS: Karen Tribble, Speaker & teacher at Sonoma Mountain School; Oktoberfest Wizard – Chris Lombardi; & Terry brought Stu. ANNOUNCEMENTS / EVENTS: Pamela is going to be a grandmother - Congratulations! HAPPY DOLLARS, FINES, ETC. Kevin had a great vacation in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Jerrie’s Jerry celebrated a birthday – Congratulations! Todd and Coral Ann celebrated a wedding anniversary and Todd celebrated an anniversary with our club. Jennifer and Matt . . . . . Mexico Vacation. Our most recent Red Badge conversion to Blue Badge is Bruce Schumikowski! Congratulations! The Interact Bowling Challenge is here – this Friday! Costumes are the trick and pizza is the treat. Come to the Boulevard Bowl and support your favorite Witch or Warlock. Oktoberfest is this Saturday – 20th – Chris extends the invitation to come have fun with us. Sign-up sheets going around and if your name is not on them please so it now. Saturday morning will be time to set-up (9:00 AM) and unload hay – hey! (Sorry couldn’t resist) Money and pre-sale tickets should be turned in to Julie (not Liz – for consistency in accounting) who also has more tickets if you need them. Sara still holds the record with the most tickets sold – 17, great job! Mike Levin, Jerrie and Libby led us in song - Ein Prosit! Zicke Zacke Zicke Zacke...Hoi! Hoi! Hoi! Origins of Oktoberfest revealed as we looked at the song sheets on the table. Beer drinking songs should happen every hour (on song sheet 2nd side) The band sings small words then public sings large words. Connie - In the September issue of the Rotarian there was an article about the four-way test – Many of us know the first test but how many know the rest and live by them? Is it the truth? One of the reasons she loves Chris – he is not concerned with where the money goes, it is only the means to accomplish our goals. Food for thought! PVR Board Meeting – November 13th – Sunrise Assisted Living @ 5:15PM SCARC is next Thursday – see Jo Ann if you want to attend. RAFFLE TIME –Jo Ann’s ticket was drawn – looking for the blue marble, but not this time and there are only 5 marbles left SPEAKER – Karen Tribble Jerrie + Dianne Z talked about last week’s origami adventure then assured us no more origami this week, however, Karen, a teacher at Sonoma Mountain School, would lead us in another hands-on project. Karen was hired by Will (Sally’s husband) for her first teaching job when Sally went on maternity leave. Now on to the activity on the table – paper plates, Karo syrup, and three food coloring bottles – listen carefully. Pour a dollop of syrup on your plate, add a drop of blue, a drop of red, and 2 drops of yellow in the center of your Karo syrup. Once you have done that start moving your plate and get the Karo/color to cover the whole plate. A lot of oooos and ahhhs were heard as the colors kept changing – experiencing the changes. While Rotarians were playing Karen explained that we are at a crisis where children do not have their imaginations expanded. Too much TV and game boxes. When a child is bored – we need to think ‘thank goodness” because this means that the child can experiment and play. As a teacher Karen feels her job is to help children figure out what the question are. One experiment is when she has the students bring their bikes to school – using shadow and design – she demonstrates how art uses multiple skills. Old school of thought was to keep those water colors clean – Karen loves to get them dirty and find new colors. She likes to see the excitement in the children/students As I look around there are still Rotarians playing with their picture/plates. I won’t mention names but it was great to watch. How can we help – start a dialog and find the beginning – there are a lot of ways and needs outs there. At the end when it was time to sign a book, it was a favorite one of the speaker. Sally hopes to see each of families, our spouses, and us at the Oktoberfest. ![]() Meeting adjourned. Note from one scribe to another - “Big ‘THANK YOU’ to Gordon for getting me started on the scribe duties. Wednesday, October 24, 2007 convened by President Sally, theme for the year ‘Rotary Shares’. Forrest F. led the pledge. Thought of the Day: Provided by Sheila: “It is a comfort to know there are heroes among us – regular people, just like you – willing to do what they can to make the world a better place. Heroes give instead of take. They act instead of talk. They step forward and do the hard and unseen jobs, to give the best of themselves measuring their own success not by wealth or comfort, but by the lives they touch along the way. That’s what heroes do – and you are one of those people. Maybe you don’t think of yourself that way – but that’s what you are. And I just want to tell you how grateful I am to know you and to know that there are heroes like you in the world.” J.F. Peterson INTRODUCTION OF ROTARIAN GUESTS: former Rotarian of Santa Rosa West, Rich Standard; Ethel Ramatici Matteri, mother of Debra; long term friend Frances Wilson, guest of Joann Ritko-Pozzi; Paul Brown, husband of Maureen (Adobe Engineering Associates). Mike Levin admitted that Renata had a birthday today with a fine. Sunshine and Showers: Linda P. won’t be able to attend SCARC, looking for a volunteer. Diane Z. paid a happy $ for hiring Chanty at Sonoma Mountain Elementary. Sara gave her craft talk: many loves: outdoors, hiking, water sports, snow-boarding; will try any kind of activity; her motorcycle. Born in San Francisco, one little sister, Marin schools, attending SRJC studying finance and business. Working at Wells Fargo, teller/lead teller/moving into management (great promotions and some fun perks); interested in getting into the investment side of things (home equities, etc.). In February will be starting her Licensed Banker program, loves delegating. She has fish named Harry, he has managed to stay alive for several months so she’s thinking about a puppy someday (she borrows her roommate’s Puppy (step puppy). Raffle: The wrong marble was selected by Jim O’Grady. PROGRAM: Jerrie P. introduced another “art month” program; the art was captured by our local paparazzo Todd. Maureen Francis: sculpture and oils. Beautiful works were shared. Still looking for her “greatest satisfaction”, although the Oktoberfest poster and bottles was great. Largest problem is time (losing discipline is tough). Tricia Perkey: pastels. She considered herself a ’90-day wonder’; 12 years ago she discovered art. Beautiful prints drawn of family members. Problems: discipline and space to work Linda Postenrider: watercolor and acrylics. Painting for 10 years, naval aviator pin, cat, why this medium: exercises: Drawing from the Right Side of Your Brain. Challenge: getting used to acrylic (white) versus watercolor (the paper is white, therefore no white paint). Honors: the first class was used as the logo for honoring 30 years of women in the Naval Academy. Greatest satisfaction: expression and sharing something that creates excitement. Art can touch the soul and change the world. Debra Materi: rubber stamping and color. Starting with plain paper, stamping, and then coloring (water, pigmenting, dyeing, etc.). You end up with something bright and pretty. Started by accident: grandmother was an oil artist; mom did black and white, Debra colors. Problem: timing and space. Greatest satisfaction: Over the years, compliments from friends on improving her quality, creating the hidden art genie. Todd Cary: He says he is not an artist, but the proof is in the art. Enthused by the emotion and depth in every person, touched through his camera. Likes to help community oriented organizations in creating their images. Started in college (Stanford) you had to have so many hours of a school community, he got the job of school photographer. Incredible landscapes. Wonderful program. pt .
