HAPPY 32ND ANNIVERSARY PETALUMA VALLEY ROTARY....August 16, 1974--August 16, 2006
Thought for the Day thoughtfully provided by Austin Garner: A noble man
compares and estimates himself by an idea which is hight than himself;,
and a mean man, by one lower than himself. The one produces
aspiration;, the other ambition, which is the way in which a vulgar man
aspires. -H.W. Beecher
Guests and Visitors: Ken Larrabure ( Petaluma Rotary), Jim Gillday,
Jennifer Keesling, Jim Tuck (used to be Gurneville Rotary, now
something else I can't remember!)
The "Russeller" got the first fine of the day by using "Miss Tuck's" last name. No last names, please!
Said Russeller asked for and got a vote of approval on the By Laws
revisions.......which, of course, we all read in detail, right? He also
rammed through a vote on increasing the lunch fee to $16 starting in
Sept. The Lone Dissenter was the other Russell, Russ Freudenberg, who
does not approve of green pizza. Long live the right to dissent!
Announcios by the Bushel:
- Shadi....Mentor Me Petaluma has gotten up and rolling at La
Tercera with a site coordinator, and now needs more mentors to fill the
needs of the students. One hour a week can make a HUGH difference to a
child. Interested?
- Warren is also calling for volunteers to work with kids at
one of the Elementary Schools...this time for Junior Achievement. Rumor
has it this is one of the really fun assignments....ask Derek! The time
commitment is only 45 minutes times 5. Think what you will achieve!
- Jim O' is pushing Rowtary On the River again as Activities
Coordinator....fun and games for the whole family and a bargain
rate. This annual event is a hoot, scheduled for Sept. 22 (if you
come early for the warm up) 23, and 24 if you stay for the cool down.
See Jim and/or Connie for reservations, especially if you want a cabin!
There will be a drawing for a free pass for early sign-ups! Get on it!!
- Terry tells us that our out-going exchange student, Grant,
is on his way to Brazil, and that Capucine, incoming from France is
here and will be attending our lunch meeting soon!
- Jennifer C. reported on Foundation things....She attended a
seminar on the subject, which you have to do to understand the whole
thing! Rotary accomplishes so much through the Foundation......Polio
Eradication is just one huge example. We have helped the World go from
1000 new cases of polio per day to 800 in a year in just a few years.
Jennifer has raffle tickets for the Foundation Dinner, the price of
which will go towards your Paul Harris. Even if you win!
- Stand and Deliver! Jo Thornton wants your stories to help
publicize Rotary....what interesting things have you in you life, and
how does Rotary effect you? Talk to Jo!
- The next PVR Board meeting will be on Aug. 23 with District
Gov. Erna. A perfect time to satisfy your Blue Badge requirement! I
think it is being held at Rooster Run at 10:30....but please check with
Russell!
September 21st is a visit and lecture by Cliff Dockerman of the "Great

Speakers" fame. Sign up now! See Walt.
Oh, the fines

with his kids ! And spent some $60+ on the fine to celebrate the
celebration...a lady never reveals.......
- Derek Stefan celebrated his B-Day with around of golf with
some other golfer types who will remain unnamed! He didn't shoot his
age...but he has a few
years left to practice for that, yet. He had a great shot on the second hole!?
- Liz Marquardt's Don was celebrated at Volpi's with more kids and grandkids, but Liz had to pay for it today!
- Forrest Frey celebrated 64 happy years with Laura...wow! And the 32nd B-Day of PVR as the 25th founding member!
- Kathy Flynn correctly remembered that she has been a PVR member for 8 years now...whew, tempes fugit!
- Not a fine, but just fine....Austin thanked all who turned
out to help at the Movies in the Park food booth. And good time was had
by all, and, by the way, they made a few bucks!
Happy $$$ included:
- Linda Postenrieder, who, by way of an Annapolis classmate,
has had a painting of hers used as the logo for the celebration of 30
years of Women
at Annapolis Naval Academy! Wow!!!!
- Mike Levin's boat is in the water again...and, if that
doesn't mean much to you, it means a lot to Mike!!!! That and a very
good blood test...which does mean a lot to us.
Please hold Jan Parkinson in your thoughts and prayers....She has had surgery for cancer this week. Card can be sent to:
25 Worley Dr.. Lakeport, CA 95453-6219
Would you believe that there are only
two
marbles left in the Raffle Bag?!!!!! Sheila won the chance to Draw, but
not the $699 pot.....the suspense mounts!!!! And so do the odds as more
tickets sell each week to pot seekers!

Our Speaker: Will Bruhns, Ombudsman Cal. Water Boards.. Petaluma River issues
The state of the Petaluma River is a complex one. It
is neither great not as awful as it could be. The Water Board is
charged with helping to keep the waters of the Bay Area clean. Will
serves on the Board for our District, which includes the S.F. Bay.
Things that are wrong with the Bay, are also wrong with our little
river. Contamination from run off, industrial pollution, habitat loss
and diverted watershed.
Sewage problems were addressed and solved during the
50s...but no studies on other Petaluma River problems were don then
that would can be compared to current findings concerning improvement
of deterioration of the health of the river. Even studies of fish have
not been made to any real extent. Only enough studies to determine that
it is not a good idea to eat the fish that are caught in the our river.
Enough studies have been made to suggest that
swimming in the river is also not a good idea. If this shocks
you....perhaps you would like to get involved. We have an active
"Friends of the River" here in Petaluma. They can always use
volunteers and talent. Lend a hand and, perhaps the next time
Will speaks to us, there will be a measurable improvement, and children
can again wade in the waters of the Petaluma River.
