to do well – feel free to send cards to their homes and please keep them
in your thoughts. Gerri Parrilla is moving with her mother to

you have been sick with this one…get your flu shot anyway!
A big
thank you to all who helped with Oktoberfest 2006 – for 2007 it will be

$2,989 in donations a nd pledges for the 17 schools/45
grants that were turned in. The next step will be to go to local
businesses and people for donations. If you know someone or a
business that can contribute to fulfill the remaining grants please
contact Libby.
Jim
O’Grady was presented with his first Paul Harris Award –
Congratulations!
Fernando Carrillo did his craft
talk. Fernando – an interesting character – as he puts it, has
been in the United States 6 years on Nov. 11th. As an 18-year-old
young man living in Ecuador his plans for the future included not getting
married until he was thirty or thirty-five. Then he met his
wife-to-be, Sandy and everything changed. Fernando and Sandy have
two children and have made Petaluma their home.
Ecuador is a small, very proud
country and the last time he went back to visit family he felt more like
an American. It has nice weather and there is always something
happening. He is the oldest of three children and described his old
fashioned father like the grandfather character in My Big Fat Greek
Wedding.
Fernando has a lot of job experience from
restaurants, hotels and now a licensed banker for the last three years
with Wells Fargo Bank. Although the 5-minute rule was broken with
this Craft Talk, no fine was imposed. – Great job Fernando!
On to
Russell’s favorite part of the meeting – Fine Time – Kathy Flynn celebrated a birthday dining
with her husband. Went to Vegas but did not gamble. Funding a
Land-A-Hand grant was a wonderful way to pay her fine! Jim O’Grady’s son Jimmy had a birthday
with a celebration that included missing school yesterday to attend a golf
clinic featuring Tom Watson (special in the golf sport) with his father
(who loved taking his son). Mike
Rabette had a birthday, which was celebrated with a trip to
Victoria, British Colombia – what fun! John Burns’s wife, Jayne,
celebrated a birthday on the 21st with golf and going out to dinner.
Rose’s husband, James, had a
birthday on Sunday. After working all day on Saturday (Oktoberfest),
she drove two hours back home and cooked for 21 family members to
celebrate his birthday. Phine
Master-Phillip has been with PVR for 7 years now, I’ll drink to
that with a ‘near beer’! In honor of Aiden’s 3rd birthday, papa Russell contributed to Hal
Alexander. Todd had three
events in October – but got tagged last week – so it was “Todd sit
down”.
 AND last but not least
was a trip to Greece by the Jerries
- 4 weeks there with Jerry (are you confused yet?) good food,
bad (but fun too) and good weather, enjoying the diversity in colors and
trying yet again to attend a Rotary meeting, however, the club was dark
due to local elections! Worry Beads gifted to Russell a remedy for
stress and tension. Almost got away without a fine but at the end
one was paid after a little dickering.

John Strong won the raffle
this week, AND, he drew the blue marble. $425 was the
prize!
PROGRAM – Warren Hernand
October is Rotary Vocational Service Month – The (Rotary)
classification system assures diversity within each club with three
service areas outside of the club. Community Service (the first
project was a public toilet that Paul Harris achieved), Vocational
Service, and International Service.
Our club members: Shadi,
Sheila, Jim, Pamela, Gordon, and Warren, talked about their service
experiences. Practicing the Rotary mottos; Is it the truth?,
Is It fair to all concerned?, Will it build goodwill and better
friendships?, and Will it be beneficial to all concerned?, they have set
examples for others in their lives. Living and working while
implementing the ‘Golden Rules’ they demonstrate what Rotary is, thus,
enriching their own lives and those around them.
Shadi spoke of the
Mentor Me program and how it has enriched her life as well as the life of
her student she mentors. There are still many students who need
mentors desperately. Sheila spoke of the examples she sets for her
employees and customers of honesty, integrity, and respect. Jim used
a published survey that talked about the differences in how ethics of
teenagers differ from their ideals and reality. Pamela stated the
obvious – It is just easier to tell the truth and not have to try and
remember what you story you told last time. Gordon agreed and stated
that it is just right to live that way (and better sleep at night ,
too!) As Warren stated in closing -
we all have the opportunity to participate and it make life more
complete.
