Tom was a sea urchin diver for 22 years, recently published author of Blue Water Gold Rush. Tom started his talk with capturing all of our attention with verbally painting a picture of a Fall 1992 dive into an underwater room, clear visibility and his encounter with a 15’ Great White Shark (more to come later….). ![]() In 1962, at the age of 11, Tom moved to Hawaii with his family. Surfing became his passion. Sea Urchin Roe (uni) was originally in great demand from Asian restaurants but has evolved into a world-wide demand. Tom started working as a sea urchin diver by accident when someone didn’t show up to work one day (surf must have been down or he would have been out paddling his board). Entering the arena at just the right time, 1978, Tom spent 22 years building his very successful business. His interest focused on the red sea urchin. Each urchin is hand-picked, a typical boat will pull in 3 – 4,000 pounds a day, although the record was in excess of 6,000 pounds in one day. Finally, Tom finished the shark story…..so sorry you missed it, but he’s here to tell the story. In his life, he has had 6 friends attacked by sharks: 4 recovered fully, 1 was permanently maimed, and 1 was killed. Tom’s retired now, continues to surf as often as he can, dives recreationally and is now doing book tours for his new book. Lots of questions came from the Club, which Tom answered with great humor and honesty. Great speakers program this year – we haven’t had a dud all year. It was fun to see so many visitors to the Club, keep coming, we love to see you. ![]() |
