Memorial services for Jim Tuck, Saturday January 27, 2pm at Odd Fellows Hall in Odd Fellow Park in Guerneville.  To get in the gate, use “#8549”.  Connie will be baking Jim’s favorite: chocolate chip cookies.  Come honor and remember a outstanding Rotarian and good friend to us all.

Both Elizabeth Marquardt and Terry Bryant is recovering well from their medical procedures.  We hope they will be back soon.

Pamela thanks Libby for her support and loan of a vibrating cow (Libby got it in turn from Sheila) during her surgery with $20 towards Libby’s Hal Alexander.  We should name the cow and pass it around when PVRers are in the hospital since it is a pam cowgreat solace say Pam.

Rickie says Rotary shirts on order and on the way.

Xmas Tree Scandals: What you can do with $700 and a chain saw
Scene One: Sheila requests Gardner to take their tree out of the house after th holiday.  Gardner takes to chain-sawing the tree INSIDE the house- smoke and pine needles everywhere.  Luckily, no Petaluma fire department this time.

Scene Two: Pamela gives up wood trees due to concerns regarding her new hardwood floors, goes to the internet, and with daughter’s help, locates a beautiful artifical tree.  For $700!   Ouchie, Pam- for some reason my old math works out different- lets see… figure $70 per year for wood tree, that’s 10 years till break even, but in ten years you won’t care what gets to the hardwood floors so at year eleven you can get a wood tree again!

Guest Speaker, our resident paparrazi Todd Cary
Getting the most from your pocket digital camera.

Stanford grad, ex-dentist, Todd worked as an ace photographer for a newspaper in college, Todd now owns his own software company doing photos for deserving organizations such as the Rotary and Santa Rosa Symphony, oftimes on a gratis basis.  According to Todd, we are now in a revolution as great as that with the invention of rolled film 80 yrs ago.  With the digital revolution, everybody can do great photos, and without the cost of film, you can practice until you get it just right.   Todd himself likes to capture pictorially, those moments that pushes the main story line.todd

Todd covered several digital camera topics :

Todd showed us graphically the relative sizes of commercial vs pocket CCD sensors- ouch, but…

The Megapixel myth: a NY Times photographer has debunked the idea that more megapixels is better.   In a public survey between 5 and over megapixel cameras, almost no one could tell the difference on small poster size images.  However same density sensors are of different qualities.  So save yourself some money- go for the best 5 megapixel!

When shooting, keep your elbows in- its more stable.

Use the Highest size and resolution of your camera.

Learn what part of the frame is used to obtain focus and exposure.  Some are middle weighted, some lower in the frame (foreground weighted).

Auto-focus by first holding the button down half way on the subject of regard, then move to frame and then shoot.   Take two at different exposures, oftimes get entirely different looks of the same shot.

Know the power points in photo composition: think of two vertical lines intersecting two horizontal lines in a rectangular frame- the four intersection points of this tic-tac-toe cross hatch are the power points.  Keep your subjects there and you will have a strong composition.

Know you flash range- take a few pics at different ranges to see where it drops off.

Bring your camera out on walks.   Morning or sunset where shadows predominate, makes interesting details stand out best in photos.

Fill or background flash for harsh day light- use simple cardboard as a reflector.

Great talk Todd, thanks for all the great tips.  I’m going to be working on those power points next time out.

                                 Arrivederci!gordon
