Thought of the Day:   (Kathy Flynn) An excerpt from RI President Bill Boyd in the recent ROTARIAN:

When we are asked, what is Rotary? it can sometimes be difficult to give a quick and easy answer. Rotary is about so many things: friendship and fellowship, international understanding and cooperation, vocational ethics and community leadership. All these values brought us to Rotary, and all are reasons why we stay.

But first and foremost, Rotary is about service and putting Service Above Self. Rotary was founded for fellowship, but it quickly grew into an organization where people who wanted to serve others came together to do it – better, more effectively, and more enjoyably than they could have alone. We’re members of our clubs so we can work through them to help others. That is why we’re Rotarians. That is why we’re here.

Jo Thorton: Jo expressed that she felt welcome to our club beginning the very first day. And Rotary has helped her realize a life-long dream - to sing! She appreciates the opportunity to sing on occasion with fellow Rotarians at Sunrise Senior Center.

mikeMike Levin: Mike attended his first Rotary meeting in 1975. He was President of the San Pablo club and also a member of the San Rafael club. he has been with PVR for 17 years. He is appreciative of the fact that being a member lead to his new job, after 24 years with his former company, he now works for Shadi's Xandex. But most important he credits Rotary for the gradual shedding and shredding of his neck ties!

Dave Johnson (submitted):   My Rotary Moment:

Over my working career, I have been a member of the Kiwanis in Daley City, of the Lions in Burlingame, of Rotary in Novato, and Petaluma. I have enjoyed giving back to the communities where I have worked and lived.

I have watched Sheila propose her mini-loan program for women coffee workers, have listened to Kathy and Rickie return from numerous Festival of Brotherhoods with international projects to consider, watched Todd take photographs to illustrate our activities, appreciated Russ and Forrest as they set up and take down for our meetings, learned from John Strong on how to help others in near and far away lands, and watched in awe as Jim O’Grady absorbed the concept of Rotary and began making his major contributions.

When did I become a true Rotarian?

There was no one moment, but attending the International Conference in Singapore in 1999 with Karen was one experience I will never forget -

the mass of humanity from every corner of the world, gathered together for “Service Above Self”, all living by the “Four Way Test”,  all trying to do more together, than what they could do separately, was awesome.

I enjoy and admire the people in Rotary, you are my friends, and I will continue to support our work through time and treasure.  I am honored to be a Rotarian.

PROGRAMDick Hermann, Economist: Secrets of Sonoma County

Dick shared with us today a newly produced film highlighting manufacturing in Sonoma County. Afterwards the club was encouraged to give written feedback regarding the production and content of the film. The film showcased several manufacturing firms including: EMG Pickups, SOLA, Lemo USA, Blentech, Leudecke Woodworking and SRC Cable. These companies, as well as many others, make up 2 billion dollars of Sonoma County's GDP. 90% of them are privately owned.

These vital companies do face many challenges; among them are increasing healthcare costs and the cost of compliance,  which has climbed to over $20,000 per employee. In Sonoma County, there are 27,000 employees working in Manufacturing and though food and wine make up the largest sectors nearly 1 Billion dollars in is generated each year by manufacturers other than food and wine.
