Quote for the Day by Debra Matteri....."Sand and Stone"
“When someone hurts us we should write it down in sand, where winds of forgiveness an erase it away.  But when someone does something good for us, we must engrave it in stone where no wind an ever erase it.  Learn to write your hurts in sand and to carve your benefits in stone.” –anon

Michael Caruana.........Drinking the Wind: Arabian Horses

Michael Caruana of the Petaluma Rotary club shares his love of Arabian horses, While a 9 year old Maltese immigrant in 1953, it was on a school vacation that he looked for a book to read at Detroit library.  A kindly librarian, in a small gesture of kindness, gave him “The Black Stallion”.  He read all the books in this series within a month- while looking for more, that librarian recommended he write the author for next book.  Today, he and wife have a small ranch in east Petaluma where they raise, train, and breed several Arabian horses. michael

Around 1500 BC, nomadic Bedouins began breeding these distinctive horses. Arabian horses are the pures of all purebred horses originating in the Syrian and Jordanian deserts.  Wrapped in religionous and superstitious overtones, these horses were bred for desert warfare.  Arabians have a noticible short head, a long dished nose, small muzzle, wide jowls, short back, a high tail carriage, and fifteen percent more lung capacity than other horses.  Arabians are known for their endurance and speed- bred for war and sport as in raiding neighboring tribes raids or racing (with the loser losing his best horses).   There were five main Bedouin tribes, each nursing a family of Arabian horses.

Today, most modern thorough-bred horses can be traced thru three Arabians lineages.  The mares determine the family blood lines.  Michael then showed a film of a foal’s birthing and the foals development form ungainly first steps to dashing colt.  The film also showed training techniques and best of all, footage of the stately, prancing and dancing gait of the Arabians.  Thanks Michael for teaching us to appregirlsciate these beautiful creatures more.

Arrivederci till next time.
